Our background

Sense was founded and is managed by Peter de Liefde, who has 24 years of experience in international academic publishing.

For most of his career in publishing, Peter has been active as a publisher and publishing director in the Humanities and Social Sciences division of Kluwer Academic Publishers.

He has published many reference works, e.g. the Kluwer International Handbooks of Education and the Encyclopedia of Language and Education. He also started many new journals such as Science & Education, International Journal of Computers for Mathematical Learning, Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education and Advances in Health Sciences Education.

Peter decided to leave Kluwer in August 2004 when the company merged with Springer. Two months later he founded Sense.

As per July 2005 Michel Lokhorst joined the company. Michel has been working at Springer/Kluwer Academic Publishers as a Senior Publishing Editor for the education programme for six years. Among others he launched the journals Educational Research for Policy and Practice, International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education, Prospects, Research in Science Education and recently Cultural Studies in Science Education. He also published many volumes in the Kluwer International Handbooks of Education Series and established co-publications with Unesco, the Worldbank and Hong Kong Institute of Education.

Michel is heading the new Asian office which is based in Taipei, Taiwan. His team will specifically focus on further establishing our presence in the Far East.
